Q
Menstrual health products are finally getting the attention and innovation they deserve. What led you to found Daye and be part of this field?
A

There wasn’t a specific moment, but rather a series of experiences I had as a woman, which were really challenging and led me to this decision.

I had my first period when I was very young, and no one had explained to me what it meant to have menstruation, so it was a very traumatic experience for me. Later on, I had issues with my ovaries, so I was always highly motivated to create a series of products for female health because I myself went through a lot of pain related to menstrual and reproductive health.

“ I was always highly motivated to create a series of products for female health because I went through a lot of the pain myself. ”
Q
Was there something that you read that made you decide to specifically launch tampons as your first product?
A

Yes, I was reading a lot of research papers on industrial hemp and two of its properties really stayed with me. The first is that the fibres of the plant are hyper-absorbent and, and the second is that the extract from the flower is pain-relieving. So, I had the idea of combining these two properties together in one product, our CBD tampon.

This is how the first product we are bringing to the market was born, the pain-relieving tampon that’s infused with CBD.

Q
For the last years, menstruators had almost no other option for something as common as premenstrual cramps than ibuprofen. At Daye you use CBD as a pain reliever for premenstrual cramps, can you tell us how CBD can help in this regard and how you include it in your products?
A

We incorporate CBD in our products by adding it to the tampon itself, on the outer layer of the tampon, where is in constant contact with the vaginal mucosa.

The way that it works is by activating the endocannabinoid system, which is a key regulator in the body, playing a role in almost every physiological system in the body. This system modulates your response to pain and sleep, among others, so it is a key essential system in your body.

Unfortunately, it hasn’t been talked about in the way that it should have been talked about and many people don’t know about it.

“ There is a massive gender bias in the way that healthcare is provided and it manifests itself in every element of women’s healthcare. ”
Q
In ‘In A Woman’s Body’ we talk a lot about how gender inequality manifests itself in the area of sexual and reproductive health. As the founder of Daye, where have you seen this most represented?
A

There is a massive gender bias in the way that healthcare is provided* and it manifests itself in all elements of healthcare for women.

Starting, for example, with women's pain, which has traditionally been really undervalued and understudied. It takes a woman 24 minutes longer than a man to receive painkillers when she goes to an emergency room or a hospital.

On another hand, many of the medications we use today were actually never tested on women's physiology because it was legal until 1993 to not include any woman in clinical trials, even when that same product was sold to those same women.

What we do at the Daye is try to mitigate that gender imbalance in healthcare by creating innovative products which are designed for female physiology, tested specifically on female physiology.

Q
How has using Daye products changed your relationship with your cycle?
A

For me personally, it has been great because I used to struggle a lot with pain and had to stay in bed for a few days a month and the only thing that helped was very hot baths, for me, painkillers never really worked.

Now, when I have my period, I don’t have to take a day off. I can carry on with my life as usual and that’s incredible for me.
